Wellston Summer School Program at Washington University

About The Program

The Wellston Summer School Program is a partnership of Washington University in St. Louis and the Wellston School District. The program aims to assist rising high school seniors and juniors in several key concentrations, including credit recovery, ACT preparation, post-secondary education exploration, introduction to university life, and the development of leadership and communication skills. Twelve to fifteen students from Eskridge High School spend five weeks on campus during the daytime, participating in academic and experiential learning as well as off-campus excursions.

Classroom learning focuses on mathematics, communication arts, and ACT preparation. A significant amount of time is spent outside of the classroom, including teambuilding activities such as a low ropes course and cooperative simulations. Other initiatives focus on building presentation, research, computer, and library skills. An insight into campus life is presented via panels of student leaders, first generation or low-income college students, and student researchers. Furthermore, themes in health & wellness, diversity, and professionalism are explored through guest speakers and facilities tours.

The Wellston Summer School Program also includes many unique off-campus excursions, which present opportunities to explore St. Louis landmarks rich in culture and learning, such as the St. Louis Arch, Museum of Westward Expansion, Black World History Museum, City Museum, Black Repertory Company, Washington University School of Medicine, and the St. Louis Science Center. At the conclusion of the program, family and staff will join the students in a culminating celebration of success during which students will share their work and reflect on their growth. Regardless of the future educational and career paths of the students, their participation in the Wellston Summer School Program at Washington University will endow them with knowledge, skills, and experiences to enrich their future success.
