Overview

Service Trips allow students to immerse themselves into communities other than their own for a short period of time (usually for weekend, fall, winter, spring, and summer breaks) in order to complete community service projects and participate in experiential learning. Service trips afford students the opportunity to learn about social problems faced in other communities and to get involved in diverse environments enabling them to experience, discuss, and understand social issues in a significant way (Break Away 2008).

Washington University, through its Service Trip Advisory Council, is committed to ensuring that all community service trips organized for WU students are safe, effective, and educational. If you are organizing a service trip and would like to participate in the Council, if you have questions regarding your service trip, or if you would like to learn about service trips being planned, please contact Sarah Tillery at (314) 935-3943 or sarah.tillery@wustl.edu.

To ensure that all service trip participants are properly prepared for their volunteer experience, service trip leaders and participants are expected to participate in all pre-trip trainings and take responsibility for filing the appropriate paperwork with the Community Service Office.
