Mission Statement
To help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies and disasters through services that are governed and directed by volunteers and are consistent with the corporate Congressional charter and the principles of the International Red Cross.
Volunteer Opportunities
Public Awareness Events (Health Fairs): Volunteers represent the Red Cross at community health and volunteer fairs by overseeing the distribution of educational materials and literature.
Phone-banks/Telethons: As conditions warrant, the Red Cross establishes phone banks to handle inbound and outbound calls.

General Office Support: Volunteers are often needed to assist with general office duties such as mailings, data entry and filing.

BLOOD DRIVE SUPPORT Blood drives are held throughout the greater St. Louis area everyday and volunteers are instrumental to our success. This volunteer opportunity requires a few hours of time per blood drive.

Blood Drive Volunteer: As a Blood Drive volunteer, you will help blood donors feel comfortable and appreciated as they give the gift of life. Did you know that one blood donation can help save three lives? The Red Cross is the primary supplier of blood and blood products to hospitals across the St. Louis region.

EMERGENCY SERVICES These volunteer opportunities offer significant hands-on community interaction through a variety of scheduling options.

Armed Forces Emergency Services (AFES): As an AFES volunteer you will help establish lines of communication between St. Louis families and their service men and women stationed around the world. You will assist military personnel and their families with emergency messages, financial assistance, calling cards and provide support for families who have lost a loved one.

Client Services: After experiencing personal loss, Client Services team members meet with individual families to help assess their needs and start their road to recovery. As a caseworker, you will assist disaster victims who may receive emergency assistance with food, clothing, shelter and referrals.

Community Disaster Education (CDE): As a CDE presenter you will teach vital disaster preparedness information to area youth, workplace employees, community organizations and civic groups.

Disaster Action Team (DAT): The St. Louis Area Chapter maintains teams of volunteers ready to respond to local fires, storms, floods, hazardous spills and many other disasters, 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. DAT volunteers provide emergency assistance at the scene of disasters in the form of food, clothing, shelter, and financial and mental health assistance. Teams also provide food and beverages to emergency personnel at the scene of a disaster.

Disaster Services Communication Center: As a Disaster Services Communications Center volunteer, you will monitor emergency response radio transmissions and dispatch American Red Cross Disaster Action Teams to local emergencies throughout the Greater St. Louis Area.

Disaster Services Human Resources (DSHR): DSHR volunteers provide immediate and long-term assistance to help individuals, families and communities recover from disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes and other emergencies around the United States. HEALTH AND SAFETY As a Health and Safety instructor you will teach lifesaving skills to the community. Our goal is to have one person in every household trained to respond to an emergency.

CPR/First Aid/AED Instructor (prior basic CPR/First Aid certification is highly encouraged)

HIV/AIDS Instructor

Pet First Aid Instructor

Aquatics Instructor

Babysitter Training Instructor

The following volunteer opportunities allow you to work directly with the elderly and disabled in our community in-person, or by phone. These volunteer positions offer flexible scheduling.

LIFELINE HOME SERVICE: Lifeline is a personal emergency response system.
Lifeline Installer: As a Lifeline Home Services volunteer you will install Lifeline units in subscriber’s homes. In a 30-minute appointment you will visit with the subscriber and provide instruction on proper usage.

Lifeline In-Touch Caller: As an In-Touch caller you will make weekly phone calls to Lifeline subscribers. These calls are the personal touch that will ensure the subscriber is safe and satisfied with their Lifeline service.

INTERNATIONAL SERVICES: This volunteer opportunity entails program specific training and public speaking engagements.

International Services: International Services presenters are needed in two areas: the Measles Initiative in Africa and International Humanitarian Law (Geneva Conventions). Being comfortable arranging presentations and public speaking skills are helpful for these roles. Opportunities in foreign countries are limited and prior local disaster experience is encouraged.

YOUTH SERVICES: This volunteer opportunity requires volunteers who are available during weekday daytime hours.

Youth Safety Education Presenter: As a Youth Safety Education Presenter, you will teach children in their classrooms the safety skills needed during home fires, tornadoes, winter storms and earthquakes, as well as helpful lessons for everyday safety such as first aid and good hand washing skills. Presentations involve interactive group activities and fun, age-appropriate information for children and young adults from grades K–2.
