Name:

Title of your project:

  • Whats Up Magazine

Abstract of your project:

  • Whats Up Magazine is a successful social enterprise that provides income opportunity to the poor and homeless through publication and street sales of a monthly urban-issues magazine. Our social mission is to organize, educate, and build alliances to connect community-based solutions to homelessness and poverty while leading our readership towards understanding and activism. Whats Up Magazine offers the opportunity to make an immediate difference in a homeless person's life and extends an invitation to action, while discouraging the support of panhandlers.

What did you learn as a Stern Scholar:

  • That with a little support and less time worrying about the bills incredible projects can take form and blossom with a broad base of community support.

Advice for Stern applicants:

  • Dream big, but focus on a specific issue and make sure you have community support for an initiative before moving forward..think about sustainability.

How would you describe the Stern Summer Service Scholarship?

  • An opportunity to dream big and produce real outcomes for the community.

What are you doing now - and how did the Stern Scholarship influence your current pursuits?

  • I wouldn't be doing anything that I currently am had I not had the opportunity to be exposed to this environment through the Stern Scholarship. I am still busy publishing and organizing Whats Up Magazine and currently employ a working staff of 30 homeless individuals. Additionally, I work full-time for Justine Petersen Housing, a low-income homeownership advocacy group here in St. Louis , managing their asset development IDA program. Finally, I am currently applying for a Coro Fellowship Position in Public Affairs.
