Title of your project:

  • Rising Awareness of Family Planning, Safe Motherhood, and Infant Healthcare in Rural Vietnam

Abstract

  • Although Vietnam is currently one of Asia's fastest growing economies, the gap between classes continues to grow larger and larger. Vietnam currently ranks number 16 in infant and maternal mortality rates in the world (World Health Organization), and the numbers are expected to rise in rural areas where economic situations are not as progressive. The purpose of our project is to hold educational workshops for expectant and prospective mothers in rural Vietnam to increase their awareness of maternal and newborn healthcare. Our mission is to provide basic family planning, and education on women and infant health education. Because we do not provide medical services, we will direct them to appropriate regional healthcare facilities. By educating women who would otherwise not have access to information about gynecological and obstetrical health, pre- and postnatal care, infant nutrition, and other preventative measures, we hope that in the long run, it will help reduce avoidable maternal and infant mortality or morbidity in rural Vietnam. Our partnership with the non-profit organization, Hearts for Hue, will aid us in our establishment of a network of women, and serve as the liaison between our group and the local health care providers. We will develop our curriculum by incorporating information provided by the World Health Organization, Ipas (an international organization that works to increase women's ability to exercise their sexual and reproductive rights), and Baby Friendly USA.
