Abstract
-
Underprivileged young musicians face few options for furthering their musical education. Most programs are costly and scholarships few. Our goal is to provide high-level music instruction to students currently unrepresented in the music education system. This will be a special program bringing these performers the best instruction often reserved for privileged children. We will present two 4-week sessions. While arranged separately, students will be encouraged to take both sessions. The program will consist of daily classes in music theory and musicianship, three sessions a week on music history, two weekly repertoire classes, a weekly private lesson and weekly studio class. In addition we will attend concerts and a present a daily listening session. Students will be encouraged to form small ensembles. Instruction will begin at the student's level of competence hoping to achieve freshman level by completion. We expect significant improvement in the ability to read and perform music and some awareness of the western musical tradition as a minimal outcome of the program.
