November 20, 2009 WU FUNDING FOR INNOVATIVE SOCIAL CHANGE PROJECTS TOTALING $32,000!!

The Community Service Office announces SIX funding opportunities totaling $32,000 for Washington University students to pursue full-time summer work in the development and implementation of an innovative community project.
The Gephardt Social Change Grant provides $5,000 for a graduate/professional or undergraduate student(s) to design an international grassroots project that is creative, innovative, and can be implemented during the summer.
The Kaldi's Social Change Grant provides $5,000 for one undergraduate to pursue full-time summer work in the development and implementation of an innovative community project in the St. Louis region and to sustain the project through part-time work during the subsequent academic year.
The Stern Social Change Grant provides $6,000 for an undergraduate student to pursue full-time summer work in the development and implementation of an innovative community project anywhere in the world. Two grants are available. Two grants available

1. FEED THE HOMELESS WITH FEED ST. LOUIS

Feed St. Louis is a student run organization which works to address poverty and food scarcity issues in St. Louis. On Sunday November 22nd, Bon Appetit, Feed St. Louis, and the Alliance of Students Against Poverty are hosting a holiday dinner for the homeless clients of The Bridge, a soup kitchen in downtown St. Louis. Volunteers are needed to help set up, serve food, interact with guests, and clean up. There are two shifts for volunteers (3-5pm) and (4-8pm).

2. WU POLICE SPONSORS WARNERS’ WINTER COAT DRIVE

The Washington University Police Department is proud to assist the Kurt Warner First Things First Foundation with their annual Warners’ Warm-up winter coat drive by serving as a drop off location. This year’s drive will take place from November 16th – November 29. We encourage everyone to donate and help us spread the word by telling your family, friends and neighbors. Be a part of a new and exciting opportunity on campus to salvage and prepare food for delivery to local shelters! Feed St. Louis is partnering with The Campus Kitchens Project to start our own kitchen on WU's campus. Empowering students through leadership positions associated with the kitchen is a big part of CKP. Several new service opportunities are available starting in the spring.

*Lead biweekly cooking shifts

Relay For Life, the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, is one of the Washington University community’s most fun and rewarding events. This year’s event will take place on March 20-21, 2010 at Francis Field. Though this may seem like the far distant future, there are many things you can do starting now to help them create a world with less cancer and more birthdays!
Team registration starts is open; start a team of your own or join a team at relay.wustl.edu. Teams and individuals have the opportunity to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, and we would like to help you be successful!!

5. CIVIC ENGAGEMENT FUND

Are you seeking funding to support your service trip, civic initiative, or community service project?
The Civic Engagement Fund awards grants to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students for individual or group projects related to civic engagement or community service. Projects can be local, national, or international in scope and take place year-round. Most grants do not exceed $1,000. Please note that internships, research projects, projects already completed, and initiatives already receiving funding from the Gephardt Institute are not eligible to apply.

As of 2007 there are 33 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS.
Since 1981 more than 25 million people have died of AIDS.
Africa has 11.6 million AIDS orphans.
As a WU student what can you do to help?
Brighten the day of someone in St. Louis living with HIV/AIDS! Doorways is a housing facility for people in St. Louis living with HIV/AIDS. Every week volunteers from WU go to Doorways and do arts and crafts and other activities with the residents (karaoke, bingo, board games, etc.)
If you are looking for a fun way to help the St. Louis community and be involved in AIDS activism on Campus, this is the volunteer activity for you!
