How to Prepare For a Successful Blood Donation

Why should I donate my blood?

  • With one hour of your time you can help save up to 3 lives .
  • It is the right thing to do.
  • You eat for free.
  • Free t-shirt!

What should I do BEFORE the donation?

  • Make sure to eat foods high in iron such as red meat, raisins, green, leafy vegetables a couple days before donating to ensure that your iron level is high enough to donate. NOTE: (stay away from tea, it depletes your iron level).  Click here for more information about iron.
  • Getting plenty of rest the night before.
  • Drink plenty of fluids before the donation.
  • Eat before the actual donation.
  • Talk to the staff before the donation if there are any concerns.
  • Bring a picture id with you to the blood drive.

What should I do AFTER the donation?

  • Eat!
  • Drink plenty of fluids to replenish the fluid lost.
  • Avoid smoking for one hour after donating.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise 4-5 hours after donating.
